Beaches, Parks and Recreation:

Horseneck Beach State Reservation

This unspoiled barrier beach is on 600 acres located at Westport Point and boasts the most expansive gleaming sandy shoreline and rolling surf on the South Coast. It is ideal for body surfing, family outings, long strolls and sand castles. There are showers and bath house facilities along with a Snack Shack, featuring clam cakes and local sea fare. A 100 acre campsite, boating, and fishing are available to extend your day at the beach.

A Naturalist dream located in South Dartmouth and nestled along a saltwater inlet. This park contains numerous wooded and hiking trails. It features nature walks and special seasonal events of interest to both adults and children. Picnicking, boating, fishing and swimming are available.

New Bedford Whaling National Historic Park
This federal park was created to preserve the significance of New Bedford's world renowned 19th century whaling industry. Its famed whale oil illuminated lamps world-wide and made the city America's most prosperous commercial port. The park encompasses 34 acres and 70 buildings within the historic district and includes cobblestone streets, a restored waterfront, period merchant storefronts and counting houses. The Park Visitor Center conducts walking tours.

Buttonwood Park Zoo
The Park was originally opened in 1894. Newly revitalized in the new millenium the zoo is easily accessible from Interstate 195 and is home to nearly 200 species of animal.

Roger Williams Park Zoo
Roger Williams Park Zoo is owned and operated by the City of Providence and is supported by the Rhode Island Zoological Society.

The nation's largest museum devoted to American whaling and New Bedford's historic role. The museum features the Lagoda, a half-scale model square rigged whaling ship, scrimshaw, whaling artifacts and paintings, and Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" display. The museum is open daily.

The Rotch Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum

This Greek Revival mansion was built in 1834 for William Rotch, a leading whaling merchant. It was later the homestead for the Edward Coffin Jones and Mark M. Duff families. This splendid home and formal Victorian gardens with historic wooden pergola are available for tours year-round.

This Whaleman's Chapel was featured in the famed novel "Moby Dick". It memorializes sailors who were lost at sea. The pulpit is fashioned as a ship's prow. The museum is opened during the summer, and provides tours by special appointment.

The Astors' Beechwood Mansion
Learn about Newport life during the Victorian Era in this preserved ocean-view mansion. Open weekends for tours through May 19th. Open daily after May 20th.

This wonderfully restored 1923 vaudeville theatre located in New Bedford's historic district is the foremost center for the performing arts on the South Coast. It features classical music, jazz, opera, ballet and live theater, as well as exciting children's entertainment. The "Z" is home to the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, New Bedford Festival Theatre, Classical Music Series, Big Band Concerts, and an Irish Dance Company. Free tours and group rates are available.

Bicycling:

Cape Cod
Many parts of scenic Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Canal area have recently built bike trails. The rail corridor along the canal has a paved bike trail on both sides of the canal, spanning its entire length. The Bournedale Hills Trail can be reached on Route 6 right before the Sagamore Bridge. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a 25 mile trail connecting Dennis to Wellfleet and has beautiful views of the coast.

Fairhaven
Fairhaven has a town bike path that leads along a historic route through Fairhaven Village. Tree-lined streets and historic architecture makes this path a relaxing ride perfect for family outings.

Rhode Island:
The 15 mile East Bay Bike Path connects Provdence to Bristol, passing through Warren and East Providence along the way. This 10 foot wide paved path offers great views of Providence Harbor and Narragansett Bay. Blackstone River Bikeway follows Blackstone River along the Cumberland and Lincoln border. Also, in South County a path runs along the Saugatucket River Heritage Corridor in South Kingston. This path will eventually connect West Kingston to Narragansett.
